Forge Valley

Our Cottages are named after the valley which carries the young River Derwent from the moors to our village of East Ayton. The valley is one of the finest examples of mixed deciduous woodland in north-east England and the Forge Valley Woods National Nature Reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Forge Valley

The valley was formed by rushing glacial meltwater following the last ice age but is named after the iron smelting which took place there. It is home to otters and teems with birdlife such as Kingfisher, Grey Heron, Grey Wagtail and the occasional Dipper.

Old quarries cut through layers of rock increasing the interest of this magical place as a Dinosaur Geology Trail.

Footpaths follow the meandering river as it winds along the valley and convenient car parks make this beautiful woodland easily accessible on foot.

Spend some time watching the wildlife at the designated bird feeding station and feel yourself unwind.
